A Home Energy Rating System (HERS) score is the gold standard for measuring a home’s energy efficiency. At Energy Geeks, our RESNET-certified raters work with builders, architects, and homeowners across Massachusetts and Rhode Island to ensure every project meets current energy codes—especially the MA Stretch Code and RI’s 2024 IECC—while improving comfort, sustainability, and long-term savings.
Explore how our HERS services help you build better homes, reduce energy costs, and meet all required performance standards.

Why HERS Ratings Matter in Massachusetts & Rhode Island
In Massachusetts and Rhode Island, HERS Ratings are a required or preferred compliance pathway for many residential projects. They are commonly used to demonstrate compliance with the MA Base Code, MA Stretch and Specialized Codes, and Rhode Island’s 2024 IECC, particularly when projects follow a performance-based approach rather than prescriptive requirements.
HERS Ratings also play a central role in qualifying for Mass Save and Rhode Island Residential New Construction (RNC) and Renovation & Addition (R&A) incentive programs, where verified energy performance is required to access rebates and program benefits.
Beyond compliance and incentives, a lower HERS score reflects better overall home performance. In cold-climate regions like New England, this typically translates to improved comfort, lower utility bills, and a more durable home, helping homeowners reduce long-term operating costs while creating healthier, more consistent indoor conditions.

What to Expect
When you work with Energy Geeks, the HERS Rating process is structured, transparent, and supported from start to finish. You’ll begin with pre-construction energy modeling, which produces a projected HERS score and helps guide early design and specification decisions before work begins.
As construction progresses, we conduct rough-in and mid-point insulation inspections to verify that insulation, air sealing, and key envelope details are installed correctly before they’re concealed. At the appropriate stages, we perform blower door and duct leakage testing, providing the verified performance data required for energy modeling, code compliance, and incentive programs.
Once construction is complete, we issue your final, confirmed HERS Index Certificate, along with all required code-compliance documentation for building officials and program administrators. If opportunities exist to improve performance, we also provide recommendations for improving your score, along with clear guidance throughout the entire HERS process so there are no surprises along the way.
